Two additional recall petitions have been filed against Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad. The Berrien County Clerk’s office tells us they were both filed last Wednesday by Benton Harbor resident Quacy Roberts, the same person who has already filed four recall petitions against Muhammad. These latest two brings the total to six. Petition five says Muhammad should be recalled for “voting yes to raise the residents of Benton Harbor water and sewer rates, for the next five years.” Petition six says Muhammad should be recalled for “voting yes to raise the residents of Benton Harbor water and sewer rates, for the next five years. Water rates will increase each July 1 for the next five years.” The Berrien County Election Commission has scheduled hearings for December 27 starting at 9:30 a.m. to determine if the language in the petitions is clear enough for the process to proceed. There is no limit to how many recall petitions one resident can file against an elected official, as long as the petition isn’t filed during the first or last year of their term. There is no cost to file a recall petition.
