Carter Hawkins has been formally introduced as the Cubs’ new general manager, stepping into a position that had been open since Jed Hoyer was promoted to president of baseball operations almost a year ago. Hawkins comes to Chicago after 14 seasons with Cleveland, including the last five as an assistant general manager. He also supervised the team’s player development department. Hawkins says he is looking forward to helping the Cubs return to the playoffs.

Kyle Schwarber’s grand slam helped the Red Sox rout the Houston Astros 12-3 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven AL Championship Series. One game after J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers each hit a grand slam in Houston, Schwarber hit a second-inning 3-0 pitch out. Christian Arroyo homered in the third to give the wild-card Red Sox a 9-0 lead for the second game in a row. Martinez and Devers each homered again, and Kiké Hernández had two more hits for Boston. Titans 34, Bills 31 – Titans stop Allen on 4th down, hang on to beat Bills 34-31
Derrick Henry scored his third touchdown with 3:05 left, and the Tennessee Titans stopped Josh Allen on a fourth-down quarterback sneak in the final seconds to beat Buffalo 34-31. The Bills’ four-game winning streak was snapped. The AFC East leaders drove to the Titans 3 on their final possession and could have sent the game to overtime with a field goal, but instead went for the win, and didn’t execute. On fourth down, the rugged quarterback moved from the shotgun to take the snap from under center. Tennessee’s defensive line surged forward to meet Allen, whose legs went out from under him.

NBA – NBA preview: Silver says he hopes Irving gets vaccinated
Adam Silver, the basketball fan, would prefer to see Kyrie Irving on the court again with the Brooklyn Nets as soon as possible. Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, would prefer to see Irving vaccinated. On the eve of the league’s 75th anniversary season, the third to be impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, Silver said Monday that he hopes Irving — one of the few players in the league who has not yet chosen to be vaccinated — changes his mind before long and clears a path to get back on the floor with the Nets.

NBA – NBA hires Danielle Scott, league’s 6th female full-time ref
Danielle Scott has become the sixth NBA female referee. The daughter of college basketball officials was promoted Monday to the full-time NBA staff referee roster. She joins Lauren Holtkamp-Sterling, Ashley Moyer-Gleich, Simone Jelks, Natalie Sago and Jenna Schroeder. That’s the most female refs the NBA has ever had on staff at one time. Scott says she hopes the notion of female referees in the league no longer seems unusual.

Kobe – LA County wants Vanessa Bryant to undergo psychiatric exam
Los Angeles County is seeking to compel psychiatric evaluations for Kobe Bryant’s widow and others to determine if they truly suffered emotional distress after first responders took and shared graphic photos from the site of the helicopter crash that killed the basketball star, his teenage daughter and seven others. Vanessa Bryant says in court papers she has suffered “severe emotional distress.” Kobe Bryant and the others were killed last year when the helicopter they were aboard crashed near Los Angeles. Federal safety officials blamed pilot error. Vanessa Bryant’s lawyers declined to comment Monday. Attorneys for Los Angeles County say the county has “great sympathy” for Bryant’s losses but called the suit a "money grab.”

NCAAMBKB – Zags top preseason poll
Gonzaga spent all of last season atop The Associated Press men’s basketball poll. That’s also where the Bulldogs will begin this season after receiving 55 of 63 first-place votes in the preseason poll released on Monday.  The Zags lost AP All-Americans Corey Kispert and Jalen Suggs to the NBA, but second-team selection Drew Timme and starting guard Andrew Nembhard return. Second-ranked UCLA picked up the remaining eight first-place votes after being unranked at the end of the season. Third-ranked Kansas is followed by Villanova and Texas. Nick Rolovich is out as head football coach at Washington State. A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press that Rolovich has been fired for refusing a state mandate that all employees get vaccinated against COVID-19. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee had set a deadline of Monday for thousands of state employees to be vaccinated against the coronavirus or risk losing their jobs. Rolovich applied for a religious exemption.  The 42-year-old Rolovich was the highest-paid state employee with an annual salary of more than $3 million.

The Southeastern Conference has fined Tennessee $250,000 for fans stopping the Vols’ game with Mississippi by throwing debris onto the field late in the game. The league office also announced Monday that Tennessee must meet other standards.  Tennessee’s fine will be deducted from its share of SEC revenue. Every person identified from video throwing debris will be prohibited from attending a Tennessee athletics event for the rest of the 2021-22 academic and athletic year.

Olympics – Protestors disrupt flame lighting for Beijing Winter Games
Three activists protesting human rights abuses in China have sneaked into the archaeological site where the flame lighting ceremony for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is being held and ran toward the Temple of Hera holding a Tibetan flag and a banner that read “No genocide games.” The protesters managed to enter the grounds and attempted to reach the area where the ceremony was being held. They were thrown to the ground by police and detained. The flame was lit at the Greek birthplace of the ancient Olympics under heavy police security.
