NFL – National Football League – Week 5
Yesterday
Baltimore Ravens 31, Indianapolis Colts 25 – OT

Ravens 31, Colts 25 – OT – Jackson leads Ravens back to 31-25 OT win over Colts
Lamar Jackson threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Marquise Brown on the first possession of overtime to give the Baltimore Ravens a 31-25 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Jackson threw for a career-high 442 yards and four touchdowns, including a pair of short TD passes to Mark Andrews in the fourth quarter as the Ravens rallied from a 25-9 deficit. Andrews also caught the two 2-point conversions during that furious comeback. The Ravens had to withstand a 47-yard field goal attempt by Rodrigo Blankenship on the final play of regulation, but the Indianapolis kicker missed, sending the teams to overtime.

NFL – Gruden out as Raiders coach
Jon Gruden is out as coach of the Las Vegas Raiders after emails he sent before being hired in 2018 contained racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments. Gruden released a statement Monday night that he is stepping down after The New York Times reported that Gruden frequently used misogynistic and homophobic language directed at Commissioner Roger Goodell and others in the NFL. It was a rapid downfall for Gruden, who is in the fourth year of a 10-year, $100 million contract he signed with the Raiders in 2018. It started on Friday when the Wall Street Journal reported that Gruden used a racist term to describe NFL union chief DeMaurice Smith in a 2011 email to former Washington executive Bruce Allen.

Yesterday
Houston Astros at Chicago White Sox, PPD                                (HOU leads 2-1)
Atlanta Braves 3, Milwaukee Brewers 0                                      (ATL leads 2-1)
Boston Red Sox 6, Tampa Bay Rays 5                                           (BOS wins 3-1)
San Francisco Giants 1, Los Angeles Dodgers 0                         (SF leads 2-1)

Astros at White Sox, PPD – Sox/Astros postponed with rain in the forcast
Game 4 of the AL Division Series between the Chicago White Sox and visiting Houston Astros was postponed with rain in the forecast.  Carlos Rodón is still scheduled to start the game for Chicago today, with Game 1 starter Lance Lynn available out of the bullpen. Astros manager Dusty Baker will go with Lance McCullers instead of Jose Urquidy.

Braves 3, Brewers 0 – Pederson 3-run HR, Braves blank Brewers for 2-1 NLDS lead
Joc Pederson enhanced his “Joctober” nickname with a three-run, pinch-hit homer and the Atlanta Braves shut down Milwaukee once again, beating the Brewers 3-0. That gave the Braves a 2-1 edge in the NL Division Series. Ian Anderson and the Braves bullpen combined on a five-hitter and won by a 3-0 score for the second straight game. Boosted by shortstop Dansby Swanson’s athletic defense, Atlanta can try to reach its second straight NL Championship Series when it hosts Game 4 on Tuesday. Pederson’s homer in the fifth inning was his second of the series. He singled as a pinch-hitter in his only other at-bat in this series, and has driven in four of Atlanta’s seven runs. Pederson has hit 11 postseason home runs in his career.

Red Sox 6, Rays 5 – Walk it off: Red Sox eliminate Rays 6-5 with late sac fly
Kiké Hernandez delivered Boston’s second straight walk-off win, scoring pinch-runner Danny Santana with a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to send the Red Sox to the AL Championship Series with a 6-5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. After winning Game 3 of their AL Division Series on Sunday with Christian Vázquez’s two-run homer in the ninth, Boston took Game 4 for its first set of consecutive walk-off postseason wins since 2004 ALCS Games 4 and 5, both courtesy of David Ortiz against the Yankees.

Giants 1, Dodgers 0 – Blowin’ in the wind: Giants edge Dodgers 1-0 on Longoria HR
Evan Longoria homered off Max Scherzer in the fifth inning and the San Francisco Giants edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 on a blustery night to take a 2-1 lead in their NL Division Series. It was the Giants’ second shutout in the best-of-five series after winning the opener 4-0. Game 4 is Tuesday at Dodger Stadium with Game 5 in San Francisco on Thursday, if necessary. The Dodgers routed the Giants 9-2 to win Game 2, but mustered just five hits back at home. Longoria broke out of an 0-for-23 slump in a big way with his leadoff shot to left-center for his first postseason homer since 2013 with Tampa Bay.

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers, 9:07 p.m.             (SF leads 2-1)

MLB – Astros dismiss sign-stealing implications by Chisox pitcher
The Houston Astros have found themselves in familiar territory, brushing aside comments by Chicago White Sox reliever Ryan Tepera after he implied they stole signs while winning the first two games of the AL Division Series in their ballpark. Manager Dusty Baker pointed out the Astros had similar offensive statistics at home and on the road this season. Houston was disciplined by Major League Baseball after it found the team used electronics to steal signs during their run to the 2017 World Series title and again in the 2018 season. The Astros lead the best-of-five series 2-1. Monday’s game was rained out, and the teams will try to play Game 4 on Tuesday.

NHL – Blackhawks agree to 1-year contract with D Erik Gustafsson
The Chicago Blackhawks have brought back Erik Gustafsson, agreeing to a one-year contract with the free-agent defenseman. Gustafsson was released by the New York Islanders on Sunday. The deal with Chicago is worth $800,000. The return of Gustafsson bolsters the Blackhawks’ blue line after they lost young defensemen Caleb Jones and Wyatt Kalynuk to injuries. Jones sprained his left wrist, and Kalynuk sprained his right ankle.

NHL – Kraken have 5 players in COVID protocol on eve of opener
The Seattle Kraken are expected to be without five players for the season opener at Vegas due to COVID-19 protocols. Forwards Jared McCann, Joonas Donskoi and Marcus Johansson, and defenseman Jamie Oleksiak were placed on the league’s COVID-19 protocol list. Forward Calle Jarnkrok has been in the protocol since late last week. McCann, Oleksiak, Donskoi and Johansson were all missing from the final practice before the team departed for Las Vegas. Seattle general manager Ron Francis said at the start of training camp that the entire roster had been vaccinated.

NHL – ESPN, Turner Sports ready to drop the puck on NHL coverage
One of Jimmy Pitaro’s top objectives when he became ESPN’s president was to get the National Hockey League back on the network. On Tuesday night, Pitaro’s goal will be realized. Besides the Seattle Kraken’s first game, the return of hockey to ESPN and the addition of Turner Sports are among the main storylines when the regular season begins this week. ESPN and Turner replace NBC, which was the league’s broadcaster since 2005. Besides a huge influx of revenue to teams, it also marks since the 1999-2000 season that the league has partnered with multiple national networks.

AHL – American Hockey League to have 10 female officials this year
Ten female officials will work games in the American Hockey League this season. Katie Guay on Saturday will become the first woman to referee an AHL game. She is among 10 new female officials in the AHL. All went through an NHL mentorship program and many participated in NHL officiating combines. It’s another step toward women officiating in the NHL someday.

Boston Marathon – Changed race, familiar result: Kenyans sweep Boston Marathon
Benson Kipruto won the pandemic-delayed Boston Marathon as the race returned from a 30-month absence and moved to the fall for the first time in its 125-year history. Diana Kipyogei won the women’s race to complete the eighth Kenyan sweep since 2000. Fall foliage replaced the spring daffodils and masks took the place of mylar from Hopkinton to Boston. A rolling start and shrunken field allowed for social distancing on the course, as organizers tried to manage amid a changing COVID-19 outbreak. Last year’s race was canceled for the first time since the event began in 1897.

Boston Marathon – Boston Marathon men’s wheelchair champ has costly wrong turn
A wrong turn near the end of the Boston Marathon cost the winner of the men’s wheelchair race a chance to earn more than the title of champ. Marcel Hug of Switzerland won the event for the fifth time on Monday and earned $25,000 for the victory. But he mistakenly followed the lead vehicle instead making a right turn with about a mile to go. That cost him a chance to set a course record and pocket another $50,000. The 35-year-old Hug said the mistake cost him about 20 seconds. He missed breaking the record he set in 2017 by 7 seconds. Manuela Schar of Switzerland won the women’s division and earned $25,000.

MHSAA – School unhappy after soccer opponent sets record for goals
A soccer player has broken the Michigan high school and national records for most goals in one game, but not everyone is cheering. Kevin Hubbell of Benzie Central is one of the best high school players in the state. He recently scored 16 goals against Kingsley in a 17-0 blowout. Kingsley coach Tim VanWingerden says it was a “little uncalled for” to set records “at the cost of another team’s dignity.” The Kingsley school board planned to discuss the issue Monday night. Benzie Central coach Chris Batchelder says any criticism should be directed at him, not his player. Hubbell figures his 16 goals will be surpassed at some point.
