Alex Cobb pitched five scoreless innings, Luis Rengifo and Jose Rojas hit home runs, and the Los Angeles Angels coasted to a 9-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. MLB – Seattle Mariners land All-Star Game earlier than expected
The Seattle Mariners were formally revealed as hosts of the 2023 Major League Baseball All-Star Game after ramping up a bid initially targeting 2024 or later. The announcement was made inside the Space Needle with Hall of Famers Ken Griffey Jr. and Edgar Martinez looking on. Seattle first hosted the game in 1979. Twenty-two years later it was back in 2001. And now, 22 years later, it’ll be back again in 2023. The Mariners quickly kicked the bid process into gear when MLB asked earlier this year if 2023 was a possibility. The 2022 game will be at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

The “Hard Knocks” franchise will have an in-season version for the first time when “Hard Knocks In Season: The Indianapolis Colts” debuts on Nov. 17 on HBO. NFL Films made the announcement during halftime of the game between the New York Giants and Washington Football Team. It will be the Colts’ first appearance on “Hard Knocks,” which debuted in 2001 by following the Baltimore Ravens through training camp as they began defense of their Super Bowl title. The Dallas Cowboys recently wrapped up the 16th edition of the documentary series, becoming the first team to make three appearances.

NFL – Lions, Packers attempt to bounce back after losing openers

The Wolverines are hoping to build momentum, going into next week’s Big Ten opener against Rutgers and its first big test in two weeks on the road against No. 18 Wisconsin. Michigan’s running game against the Huskies’ defense will be pivotal. The Wolverines are averaging 339 yards rushing a game. Northern Illinois quarterback Rocky Lombardi led Michigan State to a 27-23 win at Michigan Stadium last year, throwing for a career-high 323 yards and a career-high matching three touchdowns.

NCAAFB – No. 24 Miami, Michigan State play with Top 25 spot at stake
The 24th-ranked Miami Hurricanes play host to Michigan State on Saturday. Miami needs a win to remain in the AP Top 25 and avoid what would be its second 1-2 start in the last three seasons. Michigan State could return to the national rankings with a victory. The Spartans’ last appearance in the AP Top 25 was in September 2019.

NCAAFB – Boilermakers hoping to be spoilers against Fighting Irish
Notre Dame has struggled in two victories and fell four spots in poll after a 32-29 victory over visiting Toledo. Jeff Brohm’s Boilermakers renew their in-state rivalry with the Irish for the first time since 2014. Purdue will be trying to win for the first time in the series since 2007 and will be seeking their first victory at Notre Dame Stadium since 2004.

Soccer – Carli Lloyd scores 5 goals, US women rout Paraguay 9-0

Lloyd scored a pair of goals in the opening five minutes, and added her third and fourth before halftime as the United States built a 6-0 lead. She added her final goal in the 61st.

NHL – NHL expects 98% of players to be vaccinated before season
Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly says the NHL expects 98% of its players to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the start of the season. The league says that would mean only 10 to 15 players will not be vaccinated by the time the season begins Oct. 12. The league and Players’ Association did not impose a vaccine mandate on players. Coaches and staff must be vaccinated as a condition of employment. Columbus recently replaced assistant coach Sylvain Lefebvre because he declined to be vaccinated.

NHL – Blackhawks agree to entry-level deal with D Nolan Allan
The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to an entry-level contract with defenseman Nolan Allan, their first-round pick in this year’s NHL draft. The three-year contract runs through the 2023-24 season and carries an $870,000 salary-cap hit. The 18-year-old Allan was selected by Chicago with the No. 32 pick. He helped Canada win the gold medal at the this year’s U18 world junior championship, posting a goal and an assist in seven games during the tournament.

NHL – Sabres and Maple Leafs heading outside for NHL Heritage Classic
The Buffalo Sabres’ cross-border rivalry with the Toronto Maple Leafs is heading outdoors. The NHL says the two teams will meet in the Heritage Classic on March 13 in Hamilton, Ontario, with the Sabres listed as the home team. Buffalo becomes the first U.S.-based team to compete in what will be the sixth Heritage Classic, which is part of the NHL’s outdoor series of games. It’s traditionally set in Canada, featuring matchups of Canadian teams. Hamilton is about midway between Toronto and Buffalo.

Golf – PGA – Reavie leads through 18 in Napa
