49ers 41, Lions 33 – 49ers build 28-point lead, hold on for 41-33 win over Lions
Dre Greenlaw returned an interception for a touchdown to help the San Francisco 49ers score 17 points over two-plus minutes late in the first half and they held on for a 41-33 win over the Detroit Lions. San Francisco led 38-10 early in the fourth quarter and allowed Detroit to score 23 points in three-plus minutes to pull within eight points. The Lions turned over the ball on downs at the San Francisco 24 with 12 seconds left after getting another chance when Deebo Samuel fumbled.

Seahawks 28, Colts 16 – Seahawks pressure has Wentz, Colts scrambling for solutions
Carson Wentz’s debut in Indianapolis started well. Eventually, things wilted under the pressure. Wentz turned in solid numbers in a season-opening 28-16 loss to Seattle but was sacked three times, harassed many more times and couldn’t finish promising drives. He was 25 of 38 with 251 yards, two TD’s and no interceptions. But the Colts still lost their 8th straight season opener.

Rams 34, Bears 14 – Stafford leads LA Rams past Bears 34-14 in dynamic debut
Matthew Stafford passed for 321 yards and three touchdowns in a dynamic debut for the Los Angeles Rams. The veteran quarterback led LA past Andy Dalton and the Chicago Bears for a 34-14 victory Sunday night. Stafford found Van Jefferson for a 67-yard touchdown on his second pass for the Rams. Stafford hit a wide-open Cooper Kupp for a 56-yard TD to open the third quarter, and he found Robert Woods for a clinching score with 3:17 to play. Dalton passed for 206 yards in his Bears debut, while rookie quarterback Justin Fields rushed for a 3-yard score while getting a handful of snaps in his NFL debut.

NFL – Dan Campbell not taking moral victories from Lions defeat
Dan Campbell wasn’t thinking about moral victories. Yes, his Detroit Lions nearly pulled off an improbable comeback by scoring 16 points in the final two minutes and moving the ball back into San Francisco territory before falling short in a 41-33 loss. Campbell was focused on the first 58 minutes of his debut as Lions coach. Detroit trailed 31-10 at halftime and by as many as 28 in the second half.

NFL – Tailgating, face-painted fans back in force at NFL stadiums
Tailgating, face-painted fans returned in full force at stadiums around the country as the NFL opened its doors to capacity for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic. Some wore masks, some didn’t. Some are vaccinated, some aren’t. Restrictions varied in different cities with the Seattle Seahawks, Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints the only teams requiring fans to provide proof of vaccination to enter. The defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers welcomed 65,566 fans Thursday night to kick off the season and 15 teams were set to host more than one million fans in Week 1. Fans are back as COVID-19 surges because of the delta variant.

Tennis – US Open – Medvedev overcomes pressure, Djokovic to win U.S. Open
Daniil Medvedev had outplayed the man he considers the best ever in tennis for about two hours. Then it was time to finish off Novak Djokovic. That’s when Medvedev’s serve and his body started to falter. He double-faulted on his first match point. He did the same thing on his next one while trying to end Djokovic’s quest for a calendar-year Grand Slam. Eventually he overcame the pressure and his opponent, beating Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday in the U.S. Open for his first Grand Slam title.

Tigers 8, Rays 7 – F/11 – Candelario 2 homers, Tigers walk off Rays with walk in 11th
Robbie Grossman drew a bases-loaded walk in the 11th inning, Jeimer Candelario homered twice, and the Detroit Tigers pulled out an 8-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. The walk issued by J.P. Feyereisen brought in Victor Reyes. Candelario’s second homer, a two-run shot, tied the game in the 10th after the Rays took a 7-5 lead in the top of the inning. Kyle Funkhouser pitched a scoreless inning to pick up the win. Yandy Diaz doubled twice and drove in three runs for Tampa Bay. Nelson Cruz also homered for the Rays, his 31st.

White Sox 2, Red Sox 1 – Leury Garcia HR in 9th lifts White Sox over Red Sox 2-1
Leury Garcia hit a game-ending home run with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Chicago White Sox over the Boston Red Sox 2-1. After Boston reliever Garrett Whitlock struck out Eloy Jiménez and Yasmani Grandal to begin the inning, Garcia behind 0-2 before hitting a 98 mph fastball over the center-field fence. It was the fifth homer of the season for Garcia, who is filling in at shortstop with starter Tim Anderson on the injured list. Chicago took a 1-0 lead and a three-hit shutout into the ninth before Craig Kimbrel struggled with his control and blew the save.

Giants 6, Cubs 5 – Flores homers, Giants beat Cubs 6-5 for 7th straight win
Wilmer Flores homered and drove in three runs, Kris Bryant scored two against his former team, and the San Francisco Giants hung on to beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 for their season-high seventh straight win. Owners of the best record in the majors, the Giants matched their longest streak since a seven-game run in August 2020. They were rolling along with a 6-3 lead in the seventh before the Cubs scored two while chasing Logan Webb (10-3). The Cubs had the tying run on in the ninth after Jake McGee gave up a one-out double to pinch hitter Patrick Wisdom. But Frank Schwindel and Ian Happ grounded to first.

Mystics 79, Sky 71 – Charles scores 31 to help Mystics beat Sky 79-71
Tina Charles had 31 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to help the Washington Mystics beat the Chicago Sky 79-71. The Mystics (12-18) — who played without Elena Delle Donne (back), Ariel Atkins (personal reasons) and Myisha Hines-Allen (non-COVID illness) — have a one-game lead, with two games to play, over the Los Angeles Sparks and the New York Liberty for the final playoff spot. Chicago (15-15) needs to win one of its final two games to secure the No. 6 seed — and a first-round game at home — in the playoffs. Azurá Stevens led the Sky with a season-high 18 points.

Lynx 90, Fever 80 – Collier, Lynx beat Fever 90-80, pull into third-place tie
Napheesa Collier had 22 points, six rebounds, seven assists and a career-high tying four steals to help the Minnesota Lynx beat the Indiana Fever 90-80. The Lynx, who play at Indiana on Friday before their regular-season finale at Washington on Sunday, moved into a third-place tie with the defending champion Seattle Storm — one game ahead of Phoenix. The top four teams earn a first-round bye in the playoffs. Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana (6-23) with 25 points and McCowan scored 17. Tiffany Mitchell, Victoria Vivians and Lindsay Allen added 10 points apiece.

NCAAFB – Oregon, Iowa enter top 5; Arkansas has 1st ranking since ’16
Oregon and Iowa are the big movers in The Associated Press college football poll after road wins over top-10 opponents. The Ducks’ victory over Ohio State earned them a promotion from No. 12 to No. 4. Another impressive defensive performance by Iowa in the Cy-Hawk Trophy game pushed the Hawkeyes from No. 10 to No. 5. And Arkansas was rewarded for its home win over Texas with its first appearance in the AP Top 25 in five years, coming in at No. 20. Alabama remained No. 1, Georgia stayed at No. 2 and Oklahoma rose to No. 3. Ohio State fell from third to ninth. Iowa State dropped from No. 9 to No. 14.
