A Michigan State Police trooper has been honored for his efforts to save lives during a fire in Benton Harbor this year. State police say Trooper Ryan Codde, assigned to the Emergency Support Team in the Special Operations Division, received the MSP’s Bravery Award during an Employee Recognition ceremony in Lansing this week. Codde was off duty in February as he was driving with his son and spotted flames coming from a chicken coop next to a home and an abandoned building in Benton Harbor. He could see the flames spreading and spoke to a man who told him a woman and two children lived in the home. The trooper then kicked in two locked doors and found the woman and two young children upstairs. Codde and the three were able to get outside to safety while they waited for firefighters to arrive. MSP Special Operations Division Captain Dave Sosinski says “Codde risked his life twice to save this mother and her children,” and the whole agency is proud of him.
