White Sox 8, Twins 5 – Collins, White Sox complete sweep of Twins with 8-5 win
Zack Collins hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning and the Chicago White Sox scored at least seven runs for the fourth straight game, completing a three-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins 8-5. Chicago got four runs off Minnesota’s bullpen after the Twins erased a 3-0 deficit. The AL Central-leading White Sox won their fourth straight after losing seven of nine. Collins broke a 4-4 tie when he hit a fastball from Jorge Alcala into the left-center field bleachers. Jose Abreu drove in another run in the sixth, and Danny Mendick and Collins drove in two more in the seventh.

MLB – Biden to host Dodgers, World Series champs, at White House
President Joe Biden will host the Los Angeles Dodgers at the White House on Friday to mark the team’s World Series victory last October over the Tampa Bay Rays. The White House announced that the team, which is in town for a four-game series against the Washington Nationals, will attend the East Room ceremony. Vice President Kamala Harris, the former California senator, will also attend the even. The event marks the return of ceremonies for sports champions at the White House after an inconsistent record of the tradition under the Trump administration.

Bucks 123, Hawks 112 – Without Giannis, Bucks beat Hawks 123-112 for 3-2 lead
Brook Lopez scored a playoff career-high 33 points and the Milwaukee Bucks withstood Giannis Antetokounmpo’s absence and beat the Atlanta Hawks 123-112 on Thursday to regain the lead in the Eastern Conference finals.  The Bucks own a 3-2 series edge and are one win away from reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since 1974. Game 6 is Saturday in Atlanta. Each team was missing its biggest star as Antetokounmpo dealt with a hyperextended left knee and Atlanta’s Trae Young sat out a second straight game due to a bone bruise in his right foot.

NHL – Richardson set to hand Habs coaching duties back to Ducharme
Montreal Canadiens assistant Luke Richardson is preparing to hand back the coaching duties to Dominique Ducharme for the remainder of the Stanley Cup Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ducharme spent the past two weeks in mandatory self-quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19. The 14-day period ended Thursday, leaving him eligible to return in time for Game 3 as the series shifts to Montreal on Friday night. The Canadiens could use a boost after losing the first two games in Tampa Bay. Montreal did show signs of improvement in a 3-1 loss on Wednesday.

NHL – Canada Dry? Habs seek to end nation’s 28-year Cup drought
The Montreal Canadiens bid to end Canada’s Stanley Cup drought brings back memories of the building in which they last won the title in 1993. The Montreal Forum still stands, but it’s significance is beginning to fade. The iconic shrine where the Canadiens hoisted 12 of their 24 Cups has been turned into a multiplex theater. The Canadiens have since moved to the Bell Centre, which hosting its first Cup Final series. The defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning lead 2-0 with the series switching to Montreal for Game 3 on Friday.

Sun 86, Fever 80 – Jones scores career-high 34 as Sun extend Fever’s skid 86-80
Brionna Jones scored a career-high 34 points on 14-of-19 shooting and the Connecticut Sun beat the Indiana Fever 86-80. Jonquel Jones made 10 of 10 from the free-throw line and finished with 19 points and DeWanna Bonner scored 13 for Connecticut (12-5). The Sun have won four in a row to move a half-game out of first in the WNBA standings, behind Las Vegas and Seattle. Kelsey Mitchell scored 21 points and Tiffany Mitchell added 19 for the Fever (1-16).

Golf – PGA – Davis Thompson shoots 63, takes lead at Rocket Classic in Detroit
Davis Thompson tied a Detroit Golf Club record with a 9-under 63 to take the first-round lead in the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Thompson is in his third PGA Tour event as a professional. Brandon Hagy, Tom Lewis and Joaquin Niemann were two shots back. Seamus Power and J.J. Spaun shot 66, putting them another stroke behind the surprising leader. Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau got off to a shaky start, a day after parting ways with caddie Tim Tucker. DeChambeau shot an even-par 72, putting him in danger of missing the cut.

Golf – PGA – DeChambeau switches caddie on eve of Rocket Mortgage Classic
Bryson DeChambeau is defending his Rocket Mortgage Classic title with a new caddie. Brett Falkoff of GSE Worldwide manages DeChambeau. He says DeChambeau and caddie Tim Tucker mutually agreed to part ways. Falkoff says the decision was made Wednesday. Falkoff says Cobra-Puma Golf tour operations manager Ben Schomin will be DeChambeau’s caddie this week. DeChambeau shot an even-par 72 Thursday in the opening round at Detroit Golf Club, leaving him nine shots behind Davis Thompson. DeChambeau declined to be interviewed after his lackluster performance and with his caddie change in the news.

NCAAFB – Bush seeks to have Heisman Trophy, college stats reinstated
Former Southern California running back Reggie Bush has released a statement seeking to have his Heisman Trophy returned and collegiate statistics reinstated. Bush issued a statement on Thursday, which also marked the first day that current college athletes could benefit off their names, image and likeness. Bush gave up his Heisman in 2010, becoming the first winner in the awards long history to do that. That happened after the NCAA stripped the Trojans of their 2004 national title along with vacating 14 victories from 2004 and ’05 after an investigation determined Bush had received improper benefits.

NFL – NFL fines Washington $10M after misconduct investigation
The NFL has fined the Washington Football Team $10 million after a months-long independent investigation found the organization’s workplace “highly unprofessional,” especially for women. The team was not stripped of any draft picks and no formal suspensions were handed out as part of the league’s discipline.  Owner Dan Snyder is stepping away from day-to-day operations for several months after the inquiry revealed that ownership and senior officials paid little attention to sexual harassment and other workplace issues. Snyder says his wife Tanya will be in charge for the next “several months.”

NFL – AP source: Jags, 49ers, Cowboys, coaches get fined over OTAs
A person with knowledge of the decision says the Jacksonville Jaguars and first-year coach Urban Meyer have been fined along with the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers for violating rules governing offseason practices. Meyer and the Jaguars incurred the biggest fines, with the coach getting docked $100,000 while the team was fined $200,000. The Cowboys and 49ers were fined $100,000 each. Dallas coach Mike McCarthy and San Francisco’s Kyle Shanahan were docked $50,000 apiece.

Tennis – Wimbledon – Back at Centre Court, Coco Gauff impresses Dad with poise
Coco Gauff has won in her return to Centre Court at Wimbledon. The 17-year-old American overcame some jitters to beat an opponent twice her age. Gauff beat Elena Vesnina 6-4, 6-3 to get back to the third round. Gauff made it to the fourth round in her Grand Slam debut two years ago. That run included one win at Centre Court. Gauff’s win Thursday comes on a day that No. 3 seed Elina Svitolina lost. Only three of the top 11 women in the rankings remain in the draw. Most of the top men are still around. Roger Federer won in straight sets.

USA Soccer – Press scores 2, Mewis sisters find net, US tops Mexico 4-0
Christen Press scored a pair of goals, Samantha Mewis and Tobin Heath also scored, and the U.S. women beat Mexico 4-0. The U.S. extended its unbeaten streak to 43 games, matching the second-longest undefeated run in team history, in the first of two Olympic send-off matches against Mexico. The Americans extended their winning streak against Mexico to 14 games and improved to 38-1-1 overall. The lone U.S. loss in the series was a 2010 World Cup qualifier. Mewis scored in the 21st minute off a pass from older sister Kristie Mewis, and the pair celebrated with a chest bump.

Olympics – Soccer – FIFA confirms roster changes for Olympic soccer
FIFA has confirmed that Olympic soccer rosters can include 22 players, but only 18 can be available for individual matches. Traditionally, Olympic rosters are 18 players and four alternates. The alternates can only be used in case of injury, and once replaced, a player cannot return. The change means that all 22 players are available to the participating teams. It was implemented because of the challenges the coronavirus has posed to teams worldwide.

Cycling – Cavendish does it again, posts 32nd Tour stage win
Mark Cavendish has won the sixth stage of the Tour de France in a mass sprint to take his impressive career tally to 32. Cavendish, the best sprinter in the race history, is second on the all-time list for the most stage wins behind Belgian great Eddy Merckx on 34. It was Cavendish’s second stage win this year after the 36-year-old veteran took Stage 4 on Tuesday. Mathieu van der Poel kept the race leader’s yellow jersey with an eight-second lead over defending champion Tadej Pogacar.

Cycling – Tour organizers drop legal action against careless fan
Tour de France organizers say they have dropped their legal action against a spectator who caused a massive crash on the first stage. Race spokesperson Fabrice Tiano says organizers made the decision in a bid to defuse the situation after the spectator was placed in custody. Gendarmes in Brittany arrested the unnamed female spectator on Wednesday, four days after the accident brought down dozens of riders and forced German rider Jasha Sutterlin to abandon the race. The spectator brandished a large cardboard sign while leaning into the path of oncoming riders. She appeared to be looking at a camera and not the peloton.
