Michigan Works in Benton Harbor is offering those looking for a new career an opportunity to get training in the fields of CNC machinery or customer service thanks to the new Future of Work Grand Challenge. It’s a national effort the agency has joined to help those whose employment status has been disrupted by the pandemic. That’s according to Michigan Works Vocational Training Manager Rick VanIttersum, who told WSJM News about the program.

“It’s for individuals if they’re currently unemployed or if they’re underemployed,” VanIttersum said. “Let’s say they took a job in another industry that’s outside their skillset or are working part-time, or for those individuals who are lacking a college degree.”

VanIttersum says Michigan Works in Benton Harbor has gotten around 71,000 calls in the past year from people looking for help in the pandemic. They’re offering the CNC machinist or customer service training as well as support for aspiring entrepreneurs or small business owners as part of the Future of Work Grand Challenge.
