There were 6,524 new cases reported for Sunday and Monday combined this week. That averages out to 3,262 per day. The state recorded 35 additional deaths across the two days with Michigan’s death total now at 17,324. The state’s had a total of more than 825,000 cases since the pandemic began. Health leaders say vaccinations along with the length of time since Easter and spring break have led to the recent drop in cases. Henry Ford Macomb nurse Dominique Jokaj told Michigan News Network people should still get the vaccine and take precautions because she’s treated many patients for the virus.
“Some get hit harder than others, and you can’t look at each one as the same,” Jokaj said. “I know throughout the whole entire time, I was just trying to kind of figure out my path not only as a nurse, but dealing with everything. Especially in the ICU, we saw a lot of patients come in, they were healthy one day, and then all of a sudden, they were having issues breathing.”
Jokaj started in the ICU just months before the pandemic hit. She says there are better treatment plans now. For Sunday and Monday, Berrien County reported 68 additional cases for a total of 13,049. The county has had 246 deaths, unchanged from Saturday. Van Buren County reported 32 new cases for Sunday and Monday, now at a total of 6,161 with 98 deaths, unchanged from Saturday. Cass County reported 21 new cases for Sunday and Monday, now at a total of 4,538 cases and 67 deaths, the same as Saturday.
