Governor Gretchen Whitmer is calling on the Michigan Legislature to work with her as the state moves toward a post pandemic world. In her State of the State address Wednesday night, she said despite social upheaval and a divisive political climate, the state was able to save countless lives this past year. Now, she wants to get Michigan rolling again.

“I know you’re used to me saying ‘Fix the damn roads,'” Whitmer said. “This year, let’s also fix the damn road ahead. Let’s find common ground to grow our economy, get families and businesses back on their feet.”

Whitmer called for unemployment benefits to be permanently extended to 26 weeks, legislation that would allow local governments more ways to raise road money, and steps to reduce inequity in the education system. She had an announcement for teachers.

“Next month, we will reward My Classroom Heroes grants, up to $500 each for teachers and support staff. These grants will offset some expenses and acknowledge their extraordinary efforts.”

Whitmer also called for water infrastructure improvements and an extension of Good Jobs for Michigan legislation.

“Over the next year, we will announce initiatives and projects big and small. From tech, mobility, manufacturing growth, to clean energy and road construction, this will protect, grow, and create more good paying jobs.”

Additionally, Whitmer said frontline healthcare workers should get a $2 pay raise permanently. She closed by announcing her “Fix the Damn Road Ahead” tour for this year, saying it will take her all over the state to hear from Michiganders what they want and need moving forward.
