Now that the COVID-19 vaccine is available, questions exist about how to best help minorities and underserved populations get their shots. Spectrum Health Lakeland held a Facebook forum on that issue, and panelist and retired Michigan State Police Trooper Maurice Burton says he’s working to convince people to get inoculated.

“It’s no more than the shots we had to take in order to go to school and be in the public,” says Burton. “So right now that’s my main concern is trying to encourage everyone to not be afraid of stepping out and taking that vaccine when it’s your turn to take it.”

Benton Heights’ First Church of God Pastor Jaime Cervantes explains what the shots mean.

“Getting vaccinated means we get back to to normal sooner, it means we get back to work, and we get back to school, and we get back into our rhythm,” says Cervantes. “It means that we can now plan things.”

Any teachers, first responders, and people over 65 are eligible to connect with Spectrum Health to get scheduled for the vaccine through MyChart.
