Upton Looks Ahead To Busy Lame Duck Session

Congress will be back in session next week for a few weeks, and there will be some important business on the agenda. So says Congressman Fred Upton.

“We have a lot of work to do,” Upton told WSJM News. “We’ve got a continuing resolution that expires on December 11. You’ve got to have an extension there, you’ve got to have the work done. Otherwise, there’s a government shutdown, and no one’s talking about a shutdown. So that’s good news. But I’m hoping that we can do a COVID Package as well.”

Upton says this stimulus package would likely be about $1 trillion, thanks to there being unspent money left over from the last COVID stimulus package.

“Probably $500 billion in new spending, but you’ve got to remember that there’s a couple hundred billion dollars that has not been spent which we previously appropriated. So when you combine the two of them together, it’s still under a trillion dollars.”

Upton says both parties should be able to agree on that idea. His Problem Solvers Caucus met this week to talk about possibilities. As COVID soars nationwide, millions struggle to afford food, COVID testing is delayed, and local and state governments face uncertainty, he says something has to be done.
