West Michigan’s largest hospital system is concerned about the growing number of coronavirus patients. Spectrum Health President Tina Freese Decker said Wednesday they are expanding intensive care capacity and dedicating more space for patients with COVID-19.

“What we’re seeing in our hospitals is that COVID-19 is affecting all groups, young and old cutting across all populations,” Freese Decker said. “We are starting to see more deaths in the last three weeks. The mortality rate for those hospitalized with COVID-19 in west Michigan is about one in ten people, and so that’s very concerning”

Decker says they are facing some of the most daunting and demanding challenges since this pandemic began.
