Michigan’s first fatal overdose involving what’s known as purple heroin has been reported in Van Buren County. The Van Buren-Cass District Health Department says it received a report of the death involving Brorphine, a potent synthetic opioid similar to Fentanyl. It was first reported in 2018 and is thought to have a similar potency to Fentanyl. The death in Van Buren County was detected by the Western Michigan University Medical Examiner. The health department says this highlights the need to make naloxone available to people who use substances, although it’s unclear if naloxone will work to reverse the effects of the new purple heroin. Those who have a loved one with a substance problem are asked to contact Van Buren County Mental Health Prevention Services about getting doses of naloxone.
