About 10,000 votes mailed in for the Tuesday primary in Michigan didn’t count, even though they were postmarked before the election. That’s according to Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. She’s calling for changes to the state’s election law.
“Those were valid ballots,” Benson told Michigan News Network. “They voted on time and submitted on time, and our voters’ rights should not be subject to the capacity of the U.S. Postal Service. And there are simple changes we could make to our laws to address that.”
Benson is pushing to allow the votes to still count if they are received up to two days after the election. More than 2.5 million absentee ballots were cast in this week’s primary.
