The 1:1 computer initiative in St. Joseph Public Schools is being expanded to all grade levels in the fall. First launched in 2012 at Upton Middle School, the program provides laptop computers for students and had just expanded this past year to fourth and fifth grades at the district’s elementary schools. Expanding it down to kindergarten is possible due to the bond passed in 2016 and continued support of the St. Joseph Public Schools Foundation. District officials say the COVID-19 closure of all buildings and the switch to remote learning “has only reinforced the advantageous position St. Joseph Public Schools has when it comes to delivering our instruction to students remotely.” The statement goes on to say the district-wide 1:1 initiative will ensure equity for all students and allow for consistency for teachers to deliver the instruction.
