Whiteford’s Bill To Allow Michigan To Join 34-State Nursing Compact Passes House

A bill to address the nursing shortage in Michigan is now before the state Senate after being approved by the House. Representative Mary Whiteford of Casco Township is the main sponsor, and it allows the state to join a 34-state nursing compact.

“What it means is a nurse who has a license in Michigan, whether it’s an RN or an LPN, can practice in any of the other member states,” says Whiteford. “It’s just like having a driver’s license as a nurse. It’s great for new college grads who want to be able to do travel nursing. It’s great for nurses who live on the border.”

She adds it would allow for greater reciprocity for nurse licensing and quicker access to care for Michigan residents.
