A Van Buren County Sheriff’s deputy had to act very quickly Tuesday evening to save the life of a Paw Paw-area man who was about to jump off the M-40 overpass onto I-94. The deputy was responding to a 9-1-1 call that officers had “two minutes to get to the overpass in Paw Paw” when he saw the man stop his car in the middle of M-40 and then crash it into the guard rail before getting out and climbing up onto the ledge.

A Michigan State Police trooper helped in detaining the 48-year-old man once he was pulled off the guard rail. The man was taken to the hospital and then booked into the Van Buren County Jail, where he is awaiting charges of driving while intoxicated. Just what pushed him to wanting to jump onto the interstate hasn’t been released by the sheriff’s department, nor has the man’s blood alcohol level. No one was hurt, and no names have been released.
