Town Hall On Voting Rights Set For This Month

A town hall will be held this month to explore what everyone needs to know about voting since the passage of Proposal 3 by Michigan voters in 2018. The League of Women Voters of Berrien and Cass Counties is inviting everyone to “Making Democracy Work” on February 27 at the Berrien RESA Administrative Conference Center in Oronoko Township. League President Anita Rutlin tells WSJM News voters have questions now that Proposal 3 is in effect.

“What are the rules for registering? What do I have to do, now that I don’t have to have a reason for an absentee ballot, now what do I have to do?”

Proposal 3 allows for no reason absentee voting, automatic voter registration when renewing licenses and vehicle registrations, and Election Day registrations. Rutlin says new voters may be interested in attending the town hall.

“A high school student who is 18 and is eligible now to vote in the presidential primary, well, he’s got questions. Can he get an absentee ballot, can she get an absentee ballot? Well, the answer is yes.”

The town hall will explain how all of this now works. It will be on the 27th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. On hand will be League volunteers who have been trained to answer election questions. Rutlin says a grant from League of Women Voters Education Fund has made the event possible.
