The cost of a Michigan state parks Recreation Passport is about to go up. Michigan Department of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Chief Ron Olson tells WSJM News the price will go up by $1 in March, bringing the passports to $12 per year. You can sign up for a Recreation Passport when renewing your vehicle registration. With it, you can get into any of the 103 state recreation areas for one year. Olson says the program has been popular since launching in 2011.

“There are about 7.8 million vehicles in the state, and this past year about 35% of them participated in the passport program,” Olson said. “That’s approximately 2.8 million vehicles.”

Olson says the old recreation passes were more expensive, but ever since the newer Recreation Passports were tied to vehicle registrations and the price cut, the state has made more money off of them. He notes the $1 price increase is the first for a Recreation Passport in seven years.
