Some major recreation grants have been approved for communities around the state by the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board. The board says the grants add up to $25 million, and several large grants are included for areas in southwest Michigan.

First is the more than $2.4 million for the expansion of Cherry Beach in Chikaming Township. Also on the board’s list of grant recommendations is $2.2 million to the South Haven Area Recreation Authority to acquire a 47 acre property adjacent to Pilgrim Haven Natural Area.

Other grants include $94,000 for the Pipestone Creek and St. Joseph River water access site, and $80,000 for the acquisition of 63 acres of property as an addition to Paw Paw River County Park.

In Cass County, the village of Cassopolis has been approved for $300,000 for the Cassopolis Connector Development Project to allow for a boardwalk along the west side of Broadway Street along Stone Lake.

The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Grants are possible thanks to revenues from the sale of minerals on state lands. Each year, the money is distributed throughout the state for parks projects. The recommendation from the trust fund board must still be approved by the Michigan Legislature.
