The suspect who was killed during a home invasion at Briarwood Apartments in Benton Township has been identified. Township police say he was 23-year-old Dante Long, Jr. An autopsy at Western Michigan University determined Long died from a gunshot to the left chest and lung. Police say he and another man burst into an apartment around 11:30 Wednesday night, armed with handguns, and a resident pulled a gun of their own and opened fire. Long was found dead outside the building, but police have been unable to find the second suspect. No description of that person has been released. A K-9 officer attempted to track the suspect, but was unsuccessful. The residents of the apartment, which included children, were not hurt.
Anyone with information on the incident, which remains under investigation, is asked to call the Benton Township Police Detective Bureau at (269) 925-1135 or Crime Stoppers at (574) 288-STOP.
