With a goal of fighting racism and helping to improve the health of residents, the Benton Harbor City Commission has approved the creation of a Racial Equity Reform Committee. Commissioners approved the idea at Monday’s meeting. The goal of the committee will be to “ensure ongoing strategic support for racial equity education, relief, recovery, and reform for the residents of Benton Harbor.” The five-member committee will be run under the consultation of resident and former Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education member Elnora Gavin. Mayor Pro Tem Duane Seats said during Monday’s meeting there’s a long way to go toward achieving racial equity. The members of the committee have not yet been named.
