Upton Talks NAFTA Replacement

With Vice President Mike Pence in Michigan this week to address the Economic Club of Detroit, he urged the state’s congressional delegation to support the US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement, intended to replace NAFTA. We asked Congressman Fred Upton what he thinks of the USMCA. He tells WSJM News he believes it’s a plus.

“There’s a higher requirement for production that comes from other countries, primarily Mexico and Canada,” Upton said. You’ve got more U.S. domestic content, efforts to raise the wage base for those auto jobs in Mexico as well as Canada, which ought to help the situation here in Michigan.”

However, Upton says it’s important for the Trump administration to submit the deal to Congress.

“Most observers think that it’s a better deal. I’m still waiting for the administration to submit it.”

Upton says he still has some questions about tariffs. He thinks it will be months before the US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement is handed over for Congress to review.
