Upton Pushing For Pipeline Safety Legislation

Pipeline safety legislation is among the things Congressman Fred Upton is working on right now in Washington. The House Subcommittee on Energy discussed the topic on Wednesday. Upton wants to renew legislation set to expire in September, and tells us right now, all the subcommittee has is a draft bill. He tells WSJM News there are a few things he thinks should be put into the legislation.

“There are some important things that we could include in that bill, including penalties for anyone who deliberately tries to damage one of our pipelines, whether it be natural gas, oil, or anything else,” Upton said. “We want to make sure that standards are there so we can identify pipelines that may be in some type of stress and need to be replaced.”

Upton says the bill was first approved in response to the Enbridge pipeline spill in the Kalamazoo River in 2010. He told the Subcommittee on Energy Wednesday the process should be more bipartisan so the final bill has a chance of being approved in the Senate.
