Expect a few delays in the Niles area this summer on US-12. The Michigan Department of Transportation will start repairing the US-12 bridge over the St. Joseph River between Bond Street and West River Road. MDOT spokesman Nick Schirripa says the work had been slated to start Monday, but is being pushed back.

“They’re looking at the first of November to be done,” Schirripa tells WSJM News. “Looks like the start date will be after the Fourth of July holiday, not on June 24th. Being aware of it early doesn’t hurt, though.”

Schirripa says the project is routine maintenance, and the bridge does not have any known structural problems. The $3.8 million project will include patches to the bridge deck, replacing joints, making repairs to the steel, and painting. MDOT will keep a lane open in each direction through the duration of the work, but there will be an 11-foot width restriction on vehicles going over the bridge during the construction.
