School Safety Grants For Van Buren County

State Representative Beth Griffin of Mattawan is applauding news that Michigan State Police school safety grants are going to the Van Buren Intermediate School District and Mattawan Consolidated Schools. She tells us Michigan State Police recently announced $25 million in safety grants for schools around the state. The Van Buren ISD is receiving $380,000, and Mattawan Consolidated Schools will receive $43,000.

“Congratulations to the ISD and to the Mattawan schools for getting the school safety grants,” Griffin said. “I’ve been working in the background with them with their applications closely to make sure they had a good shot at it. The ISD and the schools in the past have applied and not received those grants, but this year I’ was just as excited as they were to be able to celebrate that they did receive those grants.”

Griffin says the funds will be used for physical security enhancement equipment, improved exterior access points of school buildings, public address systems, inspection and screening systems, fences and gates, and school safety assessments. Recipients of the state grants have until June 1 of 2020 to spend the funds.
