Preparations are underway for the next Girls on the Run 5K in southwest Michigan. Director Tess Carragher tells WSJM News Girls on the Run works with girls in grades three through eight. It’s a ten-week program that all leads up to the big non-competitive 5Ks.

“[It is] focused on helping girls grow to be joyful, healthy, and confident,” Carragher said. “In this program, we like to call it a social-emotional learning program that creatively integrates running.”

Hundreds of girls are set to take part in the runs throughout Berrien, Cass, Van Buren, and St. Joseph counties.

“We’ve got 48 teams that are practicing all over southwest Michigan, and getting ready for their 5Ks, which will happen in May.”

Carragher tells us it takes a lot of support for Girls on the Run to spread its message. For example, she notes a more than $3,700 donation from the Pokagon Fund this year is paying for girls at New Buffalo Elementary and River Valley Middle School to take part. They also need volunteers. Check out their website for more information.
