Ground will be broken Sunday afternoon for a new First Church of God campus building and ministry center in Benton Heights. Lead Pastor David Colp tells WSJM News they’ve outgrown the current facility, and the new campus will be able to be used for basketball and volleyball leagues, after-school reading programs, community forums and much more.

“The sky’s the limit as to what we can do,” says Colp. “We don’t want it to just be a space to do worship on weekends. We want to wear the thing out all through the week. That’s our goal.”

The 9,000 square-foot building will be the first new construction in Benton Heights in some 30 years. It will be constructed next to the existing church at 990 North Euclid, and should be open by Thanksgiving.

Colp says there will be space for sports like basketball and volleyball, community forums, after-school reading programs and more.

“We’re working with a community council made up of people from Benton Heights and as they feed us great ideas, we’d love to implement ideas from the community.”

First Church has run out of room at its current Benton Heights location, and also has its main campus on Niles in St. Joseph and Red Arrow Highway in Stevensville.
