Bill Would Withhold Pay For Congress During Shutdowns

Legislation to prevent additional government shutdowns could be coming soon in Congress. Congressman Fred Upton tells WSJM News the bill being worked on now would allow for automatic funding renewals even when members of Congress can’t agree on spending resolutions.

“If an agreement is not made, then in essence those departments would go on autopilot at 95% of their current budget so that in fact you’d actually save some money but keep things on autopilot,” Upton said.

Upton says another aspect of the plan is that it would freeze the pay of Congress and the White House in the event of a funding impasse. He says that’s Congress putting its money where its mouth is. Upton says the legislation is bi-partisan and it could get some hearings in the next couple of weeks.
