The wife of murdered Army Sergeant Tyrone Hassel III is due back in court in Berrien County next week following a pre-exam hearing yesterday. Kemia Hassel is facing a murder charge for allegedly plotting her husband’s killing on New Year’s Eve in St. Joseph Township. His father, Tyrone Hassel Jr., spoke with our partners at WNDU NewsCenter 16 outside the courtroom and says he still can’t even look at his daughter-in-law.

“Why would you even let your kid grow up without a mom and a dad? Now it’s up to me and her mom and dad and my wife to take care of him,” said Hassel.

The accused gunman, Jeremy Cuellar, is still awaiting extradition from Liberty County, Georgia. All three were stationed together at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Police say Kemia Hassel was having an affair with Cuellar and sent him ahead to Chicago to wait for instructions for the murder when they were home on leave over the holidays. Sergeant Hassel was shot several times outside his parents’ home after bringing his wife food from a family get-together in Benton Harbor.
