Jack Lee Maynard

Jack Lee Maynard, age 74 years of Niles, Michigan died peacefully at 4:30 a.m. on Monday, December 31, 2018 at his home following an extended illness.

He was born on January 19, 1944 in Niles to John A. and Loreta Marie (Neal) Maynard.  His father was in the military, and the family followed his career to various assignments, but Jack has lived in Niles most of his life, and was graduated from Niles High School in 1963.  He enlisted in the United States Navy, served on the USS Saratoga in the Mediterranean Sea, and was honorably discharged as a veteran of the Vietnam Era.  He returned to Niles, and was employed for more than thirty years by the electric utility service, retiring from American Electric Power.

Jack has served for many years as a Reserve Officer for the Ontwa Township – Edwardsburg Police Department, and had also served with the City of Niles and Niles Township Reserves.  He enjoyed golfing – nearly daily – at Plym Park Golf Course, where he once scored a hole-in-one.  He had also played softball, and continued to attend the softball games of his children and grandchildren.  He enjoyed traveling, especially visiting the Grand Canyon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and by a brother, George D. “Don” Maynard on December 4, 2006.

On March 15, 2003 in Galesburg, Illinois he married the former Carol Ann (Potts) Perez with whom he celebrated earlier this year the fifteenth anniversary of their wedding.

Surviving family includes his wife, Carol Maynard; and children, Rob (& Donna) Maynard of Atlanta, Georgia, Cathy (& Jim) Shamo of South Bend, Indiana, Brandon (& Erin) Maynard of Edwardsburg, Michigan, Cody (& Krystal) Maynard of Niles, Rebecca (& Turell) Denham of Galesburg, Caitlynn (& Riley) Hans of Galesburg, and Courtney (& Kenneth) Kelley of Berrien Springs, Michigan; many grandchildren; and Jack’s sister, Elazan (& Robert) Lintemoot of Three Rivers, Michigan and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Jack Maynard will be at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at the Halbritter-Wickens Funeral Home, 615 East Main Street in Niles with Pastor Brad Neese of Summit Church in Niles officiating.  The service will conclude with the Police Officer’s Last Call, and then Full Military Honors by the United States Navy Honor Guard and American Legion Post #51 of Buchanan, Michigan.  Jack’s hearse will be escorted by the Patriot Guard Riders.
