Hazel Marie Camp, age 92 years of Niles, Michigan died peacefully at 9:00 a.m. on Christmas Day, 2018 with her family gathered around at Woodland Terrace at Longmeadow in Niles following a brief illness.  Her family is grateful for the special care on the holiday offered by the staff of Woodland Terrace.

She was born on July 17, 1926 in Niles to Henry and Mary (Amerman) Snouwaert.  She graduated from Niles High School and lived in Niles her entire life.  She was employed for thirty-nine-and-a-half years in the administrative offices of the former Pawating Hospital (now Spectrum Lakeland Hospital – Niles), and was a long-time, devoted member of Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church in Niles.

Hazel’s life was a wonderful example of putting others before herself, whether at work in the hospital, or caring for her family.  She enjoyed traveling, including visits to Alaska, Hawaii, Tokyo, and Hong Kong, but more important were her travels to visit her children.  Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joy.  She also enjoyed observing wildlife and feeding the birds.

On October 5, 1946 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Niles she married Donald Lee Camp with whom she celebrated last year the remarkable Seventy-first anniversary of their wedding.  Don preceded her in death just five months ago on July 3, 2018.  She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth McClary and Frances Vorrath, and a brother, Charles Snouwaert.

Surviving family includes her children, Henry (& Kathleen Joyce) Camp of Fort Myers, Florida, Ronald (& Doris) Camp of Bradenton, Florida, Larry (& Sharon) Camp of Niles, and Dianne Camp (and her husband, Paul Juneau) of Boyds, Maryland; grandchildren LeeAnn Camp, Darrell Camp, Korey (& Jaclyn) Camp, Brian Swihart; great-grandchildren Kassidy, Chase, Jolie, and Gage; and Hazel’s sister, Sara “Sadie” Leick of Niles, sister-in-law, Betty (Mrs. Charles) Snouwaert, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Hazel Camp will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 31, 2018 at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1340 Sycamore Street in Niles with the Rev. Joseph T. Liss of the church officiating.  Committal services will follow at Mission Hills.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the church.  Contributions in memory of Hazel may be made to Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church.  Arrangements were made at the Halbritter Wickens Funeral Home, 615 East Main Street in Niles.
