Thousands of children in area hospitals are receiving a special gift for the holidays.

This week, the South Bend International Airport delivered teddy bears from their Bears in the Air fundraiser to local hospitals, including Spectrum Health Lakeland in St. Joseph. The airport says that this year’s Bears in the Air exceeded their expectations.

“Our goal was 2,000 teddy bears, and we reached 2,119 due to the generosity of so many corporations and individuals who made donations that we were able to exceed our goal,” said Mike Daigle, CEO and Executive Director of South Bend International.

Bears in the Air has been an annual campaign for South Bend International since 2011. Daigle says based on this year’s successful turnout, he wouldn’t be surprised if the goal for next year goes up.
