The OutCenter in Benton Harbor will kick off its new program for college-bound students in southwest Michigan with a forum Tuesday. OutCenter Executive Director Mary Jo Schnell tells us the LGBTQ+ Journey to College “It Gets Better” meeting will start at 3 p.m. at the Phoenix Coffeeshop right next to the center.

“It’s going to be moderated by Jen Hsu, who is the director of the Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center up at Grand Valley State University,” Schnell said

The conversation will include a panel of five college students and recent college grads who will talk about their experiences. Schnell tells us the OutCenter wants local high school students to know it gets better.

“It does, and there are very specific schools who are recruiting LGBT people because their schools are very safe for them,” Schnell said.

Schnell says Journey to College events will continue through spring of next year. The next one, on January 31, will focus on financial aid. All high schoolers are welcome to attend any of the events.
