A new partnership is in place between Benton Harbor Area Schools and Western Michigan University. Benton Harbor Area Schools CEO Robert Herrera made it official this week, bringing in WMU to provide training to district teachers and to develop new teachers. WMU Dean of Education Ming Li told WSJM News the agreement covers teacher professional development and providing social and psychological services to students. They’re also looking to develop more special education instructors.

“We are not here to drive changes,” Li SAid. “However, we are here to support changes.”

Li says WMU will also work to develop new technical and career instructors and special education teachers for Benton Harbor Area Schools. Another thing they’ll do is offer Benton Harbor teachers a chance to pursue special ed certifications. Western will work out of facilities in the area to provide that training to local staff.
