Good news for Benton Harbor Area Schools. Michigan Department of Treasury spokesperson Ron Leix tells WSJM News the department has released the district from its consent agreement, the arrangement that governed its finances.

“Benton Harbor Area Schools has a plan in place to focus on both improving both finances and educational services through its partnership with the state education department,” Leix said. “The consent agreement is no longer needed to address the financial emergency.”

Leix tells us the school district’s agreement with the Michigan Department of Education is still in place.

“There were two different agreements in place,” Leix said. “There was a partnership agreement with the Michigan Department of Education, and you had the consent agreement with the Michigan Department of Treasury.”

Leix says the cooperative agreement between Benton Harbor Area Schools and the Michigan Department of Education has district CEO Robert Herrera in charge of Benton Harbor Area Schools. Benton Harbor Area Schools was the last school district in the state to be under a Treasury consent agreement.
