Hundreds Of Volunteers Serve Seniors

The United Way of Southwest Michigan had volunteers out and about throughout Berrien and Cass counties Thursday for its eighth annual Day of Action for Seniors. Volunteer Engagement Manager Julee Laurent tells WSJM News teams from businesses, schools, churches, and more took part in Rake a Difference, raking leaves at the homes of seniors.

“We had about 720 volunteers going out and serving 240 seniors by raking their lawns and clening out their gutters and getting their homes ready for winter,” Laurent said.

Laurent says it always feels great to rake a difference.

“We always get all these little personalized notes with seniors saying, ‘I wouldn’t be able to do this work, you’re a blessing to us, the community cares about us,'” Laurent said.

The idea is to help the seniors get their homes ready for winter in a way that’s easy on them. Anyone who wants to learn about other ways they can help in the community can check out UWSM.org/Volunteer.
