One of the highest profile murder cases in Berrien County history will get underway on January 29.

Antwan Mims has been ordered held on $5 million bond after a preliminary hearing Tuesday before Judge Arthur Cotter. Defense attorney Eusebio Solis says they will be arguing the shootings of Michael Johnson and Cortez Miller in March at a party in Benton Harbor were self-defense. Michigan State Police Detective Sergeant Michael Sites testified Mims told him Miller shot first.

“Mr. Mims then states that Mr. Miller turns to his right, and starts shooting into the house where Mr. Mims was previously standing,” Sites said. “Mr. Mims says he’s a little slow, he probably got off about the third shot that was fired, and he shoots Mr. Johnson who is coming up the front steps.”

Sites testified Mims shot Johnson twice and Miller three times before going home and fleeing the area. The 40-year-old suspect was caught in suburban Atlanta this summer after being added to the FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list.
