Rainy weather was no deterrent to more than 100 who turned out at Berrien County Democratic Party headquarters Sunday afternoon to hear from gubernatorial frontrunner Gretchen Whitmer. The former state Senate Minority Leader spoke to WSJM News about the turnout.

“It was chilly and rainy and we had a parking lot packed full of people egging me on to go longer, which was pretty incredible,” she said with a chuckle. Despite having the lead in every poll over Republican Attorney General Bill Schuette, Whitmer vowed to keep her foot on the gas through the election.

“We’ve learned that polls are just snapshots in time and that no one should rest on their laurels.”

In her roughly eight-minute speech to supporters, Whitmer urged them to get involved, stay involved, and make sure they show up to vote in November. She promised to get the roads fixed and keep the water clean statewide.

The St. Joseph stop was her third in west Michigan on Sunday after campaign appearances in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo.
