A Berrien County transit study years in the making is soon to be unveiled to the public. Berrien County Commissioner Jim Curran said at this week’s board of commissioners meeting Connect Berrien was put together by transportation consulting firm Nelson Nygaard. Curran was a member of the steering committee. He told WSJM News the goal of the study is to better serve all of Berrien County.

“They looked at existing services and said, ‘OK. If we want to provide 7-day, 24-hour or at least 20-hour service to the entire county, what would it look like?’ That’s pretty much the plan that they’re rolling out.”

There will be meetings next week in Lake Township, Niles, and Benton Harbor to roll out the study. Below is the schedule. Some county commissioners this week expressed frustration the plan is being made public before they got a briefing. However, board chair Jon Hinkelman said the release of Connect Berrien at least gets a necessary discussion started.

Meetings on Connect Berrien will held as follows:

Lake Township Hall in Bridgman on Tuesday, September 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Niles Library in Niles on Wednesday, September 26 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The Southwest Michigan Planning Commission in Benton Harbor on Thursday, September 27 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
