There is a coordinated effort by law enforcement statewide to get out the “no” vote regarding the ballot proposal to legalize recreational marijuana.

Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz says that the proposed legal amount of 10 ounces per adult is significantly higher than the other states which have approved recreational weed, and he fears it will drive up crime, especially for border counties.

“We’ve seen this in law enforcement before, where if there’s a criminal activity, you come up and rob the marijuana emporiums, it brings crime to the border state area here in Michigan, particularly Berrien and Cass County,” Fitz said.

He was joined at a press conference in Benton Harbor by Berrien County Prosecutor Mike Sepic, Calhoun County Prosecutor David Gilbert, and police officers and police chiefs from all over southwest Michigan. Other press conferences were being held all over the state by law enforcement at the same time this morning. The most recent poll by Target Insyght for Lansing’s MIRSNews.com shows the proposal would be defeated if the election were today, with support at 41% and those opposed at 47% of the poll respondents.
