Benton Harbor City Commissioners have gotten their first impression of a plan to paint murals on the sides of buildings throughout the community.

At this week’s meeting, they heard from Anna Russo-Sieber with ARS Arts and Culture Center in Benton Harbor and Detroit-area artist John Sauve, who said the idea is just in its conception stage. Sauve has worked on murals in Detroit, and tells us they get people excited for where they live.

“The idea is the more you put into a neighborhood, it’s proven that more people realize that you actually care,” Sauve said.

Siebert told us public art attracts people to an area. The two have spoken with Mayor Marcus Muhammad about the idea, and say he’s been receptive. They didn’t have many other details because Monday’s presentation was just an introduction to the commission. Commissioner Juanita Henry suggested they put together a proposal for a committee.
