Whirlpool is rocking the boat once again for the United Way of Southwest Michigan.
On Thursday, the third annual “Rock the Boat” Cardboard Boat Races were held at the Inn at Harbor Shores. Over 60 local businesses built and at least attempted to sail and race cardboard boats to benefit United Way.
“The boats that have entered, those teams pay $250 for registration, and then there’s sales of t-shirts and some other stuff, and that’s part of the fundraiser as well,” said Anna Murphy, president of the United Way of Southwest Michigan. “Those dollars go to United Way to be used out in the community.”
Many teams got creative with their boat designs, with some hoping it would give them a competitive edge.
“We’ve got the Hulk on our side, so that definitely doesn’t hurt us,” said a member of Team Revengers, based around the Avengers franchise.
The boat races have become increasingly popular since the first such event in 2016, going from just five participants the first year, to 64 total boats this year.
