Congressman Fred Upton says the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is getting its full $300 million in an appropriations bill passed Thursday by the U.S. House. The Senate still needs to approve the legislation. The GLRI has been threatened the last two years by President Trump, who has tried twice to strip its funding down to $30 million. Upton says the initiative is a “critical program”that helps strengthen and preserve the Great Lakes environment. He adds the funding also helps support the southwest Michigan economy, and he will continue fighting for the Great Lakes.

Here is Upton’s full statement:

“This is more great news for our Great Lakes. This legislation fully funds the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative – a critical program that helps us strengthen and preserve our Great Lakes environment. It also helps keep our Southwest Michigan economy strong. I was glad to vote for this needed funding and will continue fighting for our Great Lakes. Always.”
