MSP: Man Who Shot Trooper Killed Self

Michigan State Police have released the name of a man who shot a trooper multiple times on Friday in northern Michigan’s Missaukee County and clarified what actually happened during what began as a traffic stop. Douglas Sawyer of Fenton came out of the car shooting, wounding the trooper, who returned fire. Sawyer was wanted on three outstanding warrants, one of which was from the Paw Paw Post of the MSP for sexual assault.

State Police Lieutenant Joshua Lator says they’re not releasing the trooper’s name, but adds he’s already been released from the hospital.

“For everyone who’s been sending their thoughts and prayers to the trooper involved, we thank you very much,” he said. An autopsy found Sawyer took his own life. It’s not known if the trooper managed to shoot the suspect. Two other people were in the car during the traffic stop, and stayed there as Sawyer ran. They were arrested.
