Blue Ice Forms Up North

This is quite a sight in northern Michigan. Blue ice is piled 20 feet high along the shores of Mackinaw City. Jamie Mersch is the executive director of the Mackinaw City Chamber of Commerce and told Michigan News Network this week the ice has boosted winter tourism.

“Our weekends have been great,” Mersch said. “Even weekdays, you still see a lot more people out than you normally would. We didn’t have a really great snowmobile season this year. We just didn’t have the snowfall that we sometimes do, and so this has been a nice supplement.”

Mersch says they haven’t had a warm-up yet, so the ice may be there for a while. She says it forms every few years.
