New Day Care Standards To Take Effect In Michigan

Child care workers will need to pass criminal background checks and day care facilities will see increased inspections under legislation signed by Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley last week week. State Senator John Proos tells WSJM News the new laws qualify Michigan to continue receiving $4 million in federal funding.

“The updated regulations in part a reaction to the federal government requiring that specific daycare providers provide additional information and security for those kids that they have in their responsibility,” Proos aid.

The new laws require all child care licensees, staff, volunteers, and household members to undergo criminal background checks, including fingerprinting. Sex offenses and some other violent convictions disqualify some individuals from working at a day care. The laws also require the state to complete annual inspections of all licensees that will be unannounced in most cases. Proos says the new laws will help protect children.
