Michigan Opens First Flex Route

It’s a first in Michigan. A flex route along US-23 north of Ann Arbor. Michigan Department of Transportation Director Kirk Steudle  told Michigan News Network the shoulder will be used during peak traffic times starting this week.

“There will be overhead signs with either a  green arrow or a red X, which tell you what lane to drive in,” Steudle said. “So, if you come up and see three green arrows, that means three lanes are open and it’s acceptable to drive in that lane that’s closest to the guard rail. You’ll notice there is no shoulder.”

Steudle says the flex route cost about $92 million, much cheaper than building and widening the freeway. He says flex routes have been successful in other areas of the country.
