Congressman Fred Upton is hailing committee passage last week of legislation designed to help regulate self-driving cars without holding back their development. He tells WSJM News the PAVE Act allows the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to approve exemptions for self-driving cars from federal motor vehicle safety standards. He tells us this allows for smooth development of autonomous vehicle technology

“You can’t have 50 different laws,” Upton said. “You don’t want these vehicles to stop at the state line because they don’t comply with whatever the state has. The future of the automobile is here.”

The House Energy and Commerce Committee last week approved the plan. Upton tells us self-driving vehicles could lead to the creation of thousands of jobs in Michigan, especially if the state becomes a major center of design and testing.
